Overview

Children can finally learn the basics of musical composition at their own pace. It’s as easy and natural as finger-painting. After drawing notes on the screen, kids can manipulate them any way they wish. Learn about 16 instruments from their sounds and shapes, check out the melody and rhythm maker, and choose from a variety of games and activities guaranteed to make learning the basics of music fun and easy.

Ages 5 and up.

Morton Subotnick is one of the pioneers in the development of electronic music and an innovator in works involving instruments and other media, including interactive computer music systems. The work that brought Subotnick celebrity was Silver Apples of the Moon (1966-67). It was commissioned by Nonesuch Records, marking the first time an original large-scale composition had been created specifically for the disc medium. His distinguished career has included works for symphony orchestra, chamber ensembles, theatre, multimedia productions, music software and website. Subotnick's academic career includes teaching positions at Mills College, New York University, Yale University and The California Institute of Arts, of which he was a founding member. Since 1998 he has developed a series of Children's educational music software programs: Making Music, Making More Music, Hearing Music and Playing Music.

Create! Play! Experience!

Using only your mouse and imagination, you can create, play and experience Making Music with this innovative software from Morton Subotnick. Making Music is the first real composing space for kids! A program that children of any age will enjoy, this software lets children experience what it is like to compose music – and it doesn't require any formal music training. Making Music presents all the components of music aurally and visually so kids can experience sound not only with their ears but also with their eyes.

  • The Central Composition Space – Enter notes by drawing on the screen. Then you can duplicate them, turn them upside down and backwards, or change the scale. Choose any of sixteen instruments the way real composers do.
  • Melody & Rhythm Maker – Create melodies and rhythms; hear how they sound separately and together.
  • Building Blocks – Listen to 6 sample tunes to learn about structure and repetition, then mix them up and make your own.
  • Flip Book – Combine three elements melody, rhythm, and instrumentation from a musical flipbook.
  • Games – From novice to maestro these games can even be played using your compositions!
